Determining Importance
This week we have been looking at determining what is important in non-fiction reading. Students are analyzing facts, asking questions, and responding to their thinking. This is something that can easily be done at home. An example would be if you are reading the newspaper, Internet article, or magazine you can talk about how you respond to text while you read. It's powerful for children to see parents do this.
A difficulty students may have is that they ask more questions instead of responding. In class I have students try to answer their questions. Just about all students are able to make an "educated" guess using their background knowledge and clues in the text. An easy way to do this is to ask, "WHAT DO YOU THINK?"
D.A.R.E
This year as 5th graders my classmates and I enjoy the presence of Officer Kotrly in the room learning about DARE, our school project to learn about the disastrous effects of Tobacco and Marijuana use. We have learned that both Tobacco and Marijuana can cause harm to our brain, our mouth, our throat, our lungs, our heart, and our liver.
We have also learned a way to solve problems using a method called Define, Assess, Respond, and Evaluate system (DARE). We learned that 7 out of 100 kids in middle school smoke. We learned facts such as smoker’s colds and respiratory problems occur more often. Smoking is the #1 cause of lung cancer. 400,000 smokers died from smoking every year.

Reading Concepts for the week of October 4th
This week we have been studying sub-headings there are two important ones: Standard and Inferential. Inferential sub-headings mean that you need to use your knowledge to find out what the sub-heading means. Standard sub-headings are much simpler you just look at them and it and know what it means such as “Cows” on an article about farms.
In more specific and challenging articles more often than not they’re inferential. Infer mans you use your knowledge and text clues (how the word is used) to give an educated guess. Inferential ones sometimes can be hard since if you have limited knowledge you might not know certain word(s) mean. Such as in a space article you might think when they reference to the Milky Way Galaxy you might think it is about some candy.
A standard subheading would be like a subheading called fish. Obviously, the following writing after the subheading called fish is about fish. What we have been doing with the standard subheadings this week is we have been reading articles with multiple subheadings inside. We list the subheadings on a blank loose-leaf paper and decide if it is a standard subheading. So far, the awesome Mr. Gebauer has been evaluating our work and has said that we have done a good job for our grade. So that is what we have to say about subheadings!

Personal Narratives
The following are personal narratives from members of the class.
The Marriot Hotel
By: Bradley M
Before we knew it, the plane landed on the runway. The plane slowly descended in speed and shifted to a stop. My family was on a business trip for my dad’s work. We were in the amazing Orlando, Florida.
We had just arrived and stepped in the rushing surroundings of the airport. We rushed towards the baggage claim, blending in with the other airport fellows. We quickly snatched our bags to avoid being trampled over. We walked to the nearby rental car place. We rented a car and drove off.
We arrived at the hotel we were assigned to stay ar. I stepped out, closed my eves and deeply inhaled. I opened my eyes. My eyes went crazy. The hotel was amazingly huge. It had a golf course, two outdoor pools, one indoor, and a hot tub. When I stepped in, there was more luxury. There were two glass elevators surrounded in a mini fountain. It was the largest hotel I’ve seen . I’ll never forget that exguisite hotel. The Marriot Hotel.
City Museum
Charlie
When we arrived at the City Museum I looked up and I saw a bus hanging from the building. When I got in someone told me that it was made out of recycle materials. I went outside and I saw tunnels and a super sized playground. In order to get to the other side you had to go through a tunnel. While I was halfway through I looked down and I was freaking out. I tried to go back but someone was behind me so I asked him if he could move. Since he was a nice guy he backed up so I could get out. Finally I was safe at last.
When we were done with that I heard there was a slide five story slide. I said “where is it”. We looked and we looked finally there it was a five story slide. I was so excited I started to walk up the stairs halfway through I was exhausted. I didn’t know if I could make it the rest of the way. Finally I made it to the top the ride down was so worth it. The City Museum is probably the funnest time I ever had.
Nice Interception
My flag football team is the Steelers. We lost our first game and we were playing our second game. We gave up two touchdowns. I’m on defense and playing corner back I can hear the plays. I’m going to get a interception my brain is telling me. This is run they hike it, it goes long I finally bring him down. Now they have to pass it they’re inside the five. Next play I go with my man I slip and bat the ball down.
“I’m going to get this one” I say out loud. 3rd down they hike it I dive and tip it three times and again towards me and catch it I get up and start running down the sideline I juke the quarterback. The 30 … 20… 10…touchdown!!!! I was so exhausted when the first man jumped on me I fell down and it was a dog pile!!!!!!!!

WHEN THERE WAS A SQUIRRL IN THE BASEMENT BY: DAIJA P.
When me and my family was cleaning my grandma’s basment we saw, a squirrel wrap in a cover lying on the ground. My sister screamed so loud it sounded like a bear growling. I felt like I was going to puke, Bcause it stunk so bad like my dogs breathe.
Before I knew it, I ran up the stairs and I puked. Then I whipped my mouth and went back down stairs. Then my mom made my big sister take the cover outside to the garbage.
After that the door bell rung twice. So I went to the dooor.Guess who it was, it was my other big sister who I haven’t seen in a very long time.
She came over to help clean out the basement. So I told her to come in then I went to the stairs and yelled “Kia’s here “.Everybody came up the stairs.
So then we all went back down stairs together all the garbage so that we could take it out. When we all got the garbage. Everybody garbed a bag and took it to the garbage can.
When we came back in my grandma started to make lunch. I went to the bathroom to wash my hands. Once I went back in the kitchen and sat at the table.
My grandma handed me my plate and juice I said my grace and started eating. Then my sister said something funny that made me laugh so hard. Then guess what happened, my food that was in my mouth flew out and hit my sister so hard that her face it looked like it was turning red.
My whole family started laughing except my sister. My sister’s face was redder than my mom’s face when she gets mad. Then she ran in to the bathroom as quickly as she could.
She ran in the bathroom as quickly has she can. She grabs a paper towel and wet it. She whipped the spagatti sauce off her face and ran in to the living room to watch T.V.
THAT’S THE END OF MY STORY THX FOR LISTENING.

This Is For 3rd!!! Please read it
I was standing in the back of the mound, bullets of sweat racing at the 3-2 count. All of these thoughts scramming in my head, 2 outs, 3-2 count, just how should I do this? You just gotta believe in yourself. “Ring em up Emmy” my dad shouts like he always does when there’s 2 strikes. “Don’t aim it just throw it Em!” Coach Kelly reminded me. Okay, here I go I thought. I carefully stepped on the mound “This is for 3rd” Jackie screamed, oh great more pressure. “POP” Abby’s glove said, than I closed my eyes.” STRIKE 3” the ump screamed “yea!!!!” the team screamed. We all tromped in to the coach. “Let’s lift her up” Katie shouted. I felt sooooooo happy, well, obviously that didn’t work. 3RD PLACE MEDAL HERE WE COME
While I was packing up my bag people were telling me how good I was, one parent told me I was so awesome, right then I knew how good I was. I tromped up to my dad and he said I was excellent!. Than Katie Andrews dad came up to me “Dude you rocked out there” he said “Thanks, that’s what I do!” not just because I struck out that last batter, because I struck out the entire team before. Well we got our medals and moved on with the rest of our lives. And that’s how we got our 1st place medal.
Thanks for reading, Emily S.
Hurricane
By Emma
When I was eight, I went to the dells for a week with my mom, my dad, and two of my sisters. After about two days we went to one of the water parks. Inside we played for awhile then we looked around and saw a cool looking slide, and said; “let’s go on the hurricane”!
The hurricane was maybe the biggest slide there. So we went to the line to wait. Guess what? The line went all the way up the seven maybe eight stair sets high! We waited for a really long time. Since the ride was called hurricane there was a track making thunder sounds and lights flashing. My mom chose not to come, good thing too; only four people per raft.
We finally got to the top and climbed into the tube. “Hold on” The life guard said. “And don’t, let, go”! And we were off. Twisting and turning with full speed ahead. Then with no warning, (well obviously) we hit a huge drop. My dad screamed. Why? Because his back was to the drop. It was an immensely fun ride. Then we came out into this big thing, sort of like the shape of a hurricane. We went around, and around and then we came out. I had a great time on the ride.
Texas
When I first knew that I was going to Texas I felt like I was not going to but I did. When I and my family were at the Airport waiting to go but then it got cancelled. The next day we were supposed to leave in the morning but we didn’t until 3:00. Then I got to Atlanta it was about 5:00. Then I didn’t leave to Dallas until 8:00. I finally arrived in Dallas. I saw my brother Michael he is 24.He got a job here for a year already. It was 10:00 and it took a hour to rent the car. I didn’t get to the hotel until 11:00. It was a hugely long night. Then my mom woke me up and I said “I don’t want to get up”. But I got up ten minutes later. Later that day we went to a restaurant. So then my dad ordered ribs and he said “let’s see some Texas stile Ribs”. But it ended being really small. The next day we went to the Dallas Cowboys Stadium. When we got in there we got just in time for the tour. It cost 1.4 Billion Dollars to make. When we were on the field we had a football and we were acting like we were NFL Players. We got pictures there and also Steven got a Jersey. We were also in the locker room and the Cheerleader locker room but I thought that place was ginoramus. Then like a weak later we left but I thought It probley was the best vacation in a long time besides Orlando.

Final score
I was dribbling down the court with 15 seconds left in the game. Driving toward the hoop as I got fouled going up at the basket hard. I would get to shoot two at the line. Right when I got there my coached called a time-out. I got relaxed and sat down my dad was trying to calm me down. The time-out was over and I went back to the line to shoot my two free throws. We were down by two 9 seconds left. These free throws would probably put the game into overtime.
I was really nervous on the line. My team was horrible at free throws. My team was horrible at free throws. My first free throw was up and good my team jumped from the bench. The second free throw witch was going to tie the game went in ‘yes’! We still had to stop them on defense. My coach called a press. The time ticked down 9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2, he shot the ball and missed and the buzzer went off we went into overtime. It was a jump ball it was the first team to scores wins there team got the ball first. They went down the court and ran a play but they didn’t score. We Were going down the court now and my coach yelled princeston right. I noticed that I was on the right side I was going to take the last shot he dribbled my way I cut backdoor and he passed the ball to me and I shot it and I made it my team won the game I was very proud of myself that game and are team ended up winning that tournament.

Mini Bike Crash
Until now everything was fine, my brother and I were riding the mini bike. We were riding it when we started going too fast. I yelled slow down!! I was scared we would crash. The grass was wet and muddy. I said lets go back up to grandmas. He said just one more time around the pond.
All of the sudden, we started swerving side to side then slid. Before I knew it, I was on the ground with the mini bike on top of me and my brother a few feet away from me! He got up and ran towards me and took the mini bike off of me.
We went back up to my grandma’s house. My grandma put ice on my leg it was by my ankle. It is like a huge burn on my leg. I still have that mark from it. I will always blame my brother for that. If he only had stopped when I said he should’ve. He should definitely listen to me more often.

The Pool In California
When we were in California at a hotel me were and my brothers were going swimming. So when we got down there we saw a lot of garbage in it. It was really gross. We saw a lot of leaves, and a water bottle.
My brothers said I have to test it. So I stuck my foot in the water and it cold!!! I walked in to see if it would get warmer if I stayed in for a while but it didn’t.
So then we tried to find another pool, and we did. Right when got there I jumped in, and wow!!! It felt like I was melting from binging frozen for a long time. Then I went to see how warm the hot tub was. It wasn’t that hot. We were there for an hour and a half. It was really fun.
The End!!!!!!!

Have you ever had thoughts like: How many numbers could there be? And why they were made? How? Also why? And as you keep thinking your thoughts get deeper and deeper and more questions come up. Here is a good one, how big is space? Does it really go on forever? Could our discoverers so far just be a dot floating in space? In a huge never ending galaxy. I get that a lot but why? How? And when? I’m doing it again. Then you get a hypothesis then questions go with the hypothesis which gets thoughts deeper which leads more hypothesis.
The time I went to the zoo with my cousin
So, I went to the zoo with my cousin because, you could pet the sting rays and, feed them. My cousin, Alyssa is kind of scared of sting rays . so I fed the sting rays to show her how to do it. After I did it about ten times she finaly put her hand in the sting ray tank but, she freaked out and started screaming. She did not want to touch them ever again. So I made her do it again and she stuck her fingers in the tank, and she freaked out for the second time and started screaming!!! I told her to do it until she stopped screaming. And I told her that once she does it a couple times she will think it’s really fun! So, I told her to do it again, and she did. But, this time she said it was really fun and wanted to do it alot more times! And than I said to her I told you it would be fun. But, before we knew it, my mom said it was time to leave.

When I Caught my 20in Northern
By: Megan
One day I was up north at my cabin and I decided to go fishing. I was about 4yrs old so I had about a 20in fishing pole. I had a long night crawler on my hook and I just dropped it into the water right next to the pier. Then I had a little perch on my line so I started reeling it in and while it was in the water a big Northern jumped on.
At that point I did not know that the Northern was on so I kept reeling and it got heavier and heavier. Then I got so scared that I screamed for my mom and luckily she was just in the fish house next to the pier and she came running towards me and took my fishing pole and told me to go get my Aunty Paula and Grandma Carney and tell them what happened and tell them to come down here, So I did.
Once I got to the house I was so scared I was crying. They asked me what was wrong and I said “I caught a big fish and mom wants you to come down by us”. They did not understand me so the just came down with me. Once they got down by the fish they both said “wow”. Then we took some pictures and measured it and it was 20in long and I was so exited but then we had to let it go. So I said Good- Bye to my big fish and we let it go.

The Trampoline in the Ocean
By: Melissa
Why, why couldn’t I go to the trampoline in the ocean? My dad started explaining why I couldn’t go on the trampoline, but a wave interrupted our conversation and salt water was in my mouth and it tasted horrible. When I got out of the water I saw my dad talking to a girl and her mom, I saw the girl earlier at the really cold pool between the main poll and the poolside bar with her dad and brother. My dad told me if I wanted to go on the trampoline I should go with the girl and her mom (I felt nervous to go with them, because I barely know them). We got into the water and the girl’s mom stared saying “Are you guys ok Stephanie and Melissa” so that’s when I figured out her name was Stephanie. Stephanie and I were really annoyed.
We finally got on the trampoline. Stephanie and I started to get to know each other, she lives in Connecticut, she has a really long driveway and she has a really annoying brother. We started Jumping and a kid from Connecticut (just like Stephanie!)Got on the trampoline and started jumping up and down really hard and tipped Stephanie over. Stephanie’s mom got off and big waves came, but the waves didn’t hit her. Stephanie and the kid started jumping and I felt sick, but I didn’t get off, because I had to watch Stephanie. I knew I had to conqueror my fear so I stood up and didn’t get tipped off the trampoline.
We got of the trampoline and I and Stephanie kept getting knocked by the waves. We kept screaming and finally Stephanie’s mom came to pull us to shore. Stephanie and agreed to never go on a floating trampoline in the ocean even thought we were in the dangerous area.
The Saturn Raft
By: Morgan
When I was on a tipping raft that looks like the planet Saturn, I should have known there were too many people on it.
It was an ordinary day at my usual campsite. My friends and I went swimming in the lake across from our campsite for a while. Then we saw my dad walking towards us in his swimming trunks and his towel over his shoulder. My friends were excited but my brother and me were thinking “oh dear why is he coming.” He put his towel over by ours and swam over by us at the raft we were on. Out of nowhere we all asked him if he could help us on the Saturn raft across from where we were. He said “why not, let’s go.” We each went to an edge of the raft and jumped in. He helped us all on the raft.
After we got on I felt weird and shaky. All of my friends said “oh my gosh this feels so weird.” Then my dad started to shake the raft, we all screamed except for my dad, we stopped screaming when he stopped shaking. We all looked at my dad, he was laughing, and then we started to laugh. Brandon sat in the middle high up. We all asked him if he was scared, he said no.
All of a sudden we felt the raft shaking, our hearts pounding and the ringing in our ears from our screaming. We all jumped into the lake one by one just before the raft tipped over. We all decided to go on a different raft after are experience on the tipping Saturn raft that day.
The End!
After I took my first shower of the day, things just went downhill. I was sitting on the love seat in the basement when my brother brings his stupid Nerf gun in the basement and starts playing with it. “Shut up Rashad you’re making too much noise”! Daija yells at Rashad to stop making so much noise multiple times but he just didn’t listen. So Daija got so mad that she grabs a pillow and hits Rashad as hard as she can, while I just sat there and did nothing. Rashad starts crying while Daija and I start laughing. “Why did you do that”!? Rashad yells at Daija. Rashad got so mad that Daija hit him with a pillow that he starts punching and kicking her. (She didn’t even cry all she did was sit there and took it). “Are you ok”? I said in a scared voice. “Yeah I’m good”. After that things even go more downhill.

The First Time I Went Swimming at my Grandparent’s Lake
One Thursday morning, I went to my Grandparents house for the day. My Mom was driving me. When we got there, I saw my Grandma was waiting by the window for me.
When we got in the house, I talked with my Grandma and Mom until about 7:40 am. Once my Mom left, we had breakfast.
When we were done, I asked her, “When are we going to go swimming today?” She said, “Probably around noon.” “OK.” I said.
After lunch, we finally went swimming, and so we both got our swim suits on, and we went down to the dock (swimming area.)
I brought a tube, and my Grandma brought her noodle with her. When we got down there, I saw the lake, and it was soo ugly. I asked my Grandma, “Why is there seaweed everywhere?” She said, “Because there was big waves last night, sorry about that.”
Finally, we went swimming. My Grandma felt the water, and told me it was pretty cold. She got in, and told me, “Please come in with me.” “I’m kind of scared.” I said. “Well, it’s not that bad.” She said. “Okayyyy” I said.
When I got my foot in, I felt weird. Then… I got in.
I was feeling cold, but good. Then, I got in my tube I brought down with me, and told my Grandma to hold my tube, so I don’t float away.
I put my goggles on. I went under water in the shallowest place in the lake, which is about 3 feet deep. And guess what I saw… A crab. I showed my Grandma the crab and she looked in the water and said, “oh, well look at that, just a little guy, huh?” “Yupp.” I said.
And when we were done swimming, we went back up and changed. Then, like ten minutes after that, my Mom got there. Then, we went home.
And that was the first time I went swimming at my grandparent’s lake.

Even if I had my limited common sense, I would not of agreed to run through random properties. But know is no then.
My heart was pounding as my friend Sahil, his twin sister Alisha, her older sister Ashani and I crossed into the third and last property. You might be wondering why we felt compelled to run through lots. We had just finished ding-dong ditching someone.
As we were covered in the immense shadow of the newly painted house a truck pulled into the driveway. My breath was knocked out of my lungs and I started coughing and wheezing. The truck was a rumbling old red F-150 it creaked to stop. In the back there was a bunch of drunken brutes.
We had just dropped the bag off and were going into the second backyard. Then a red scratched up Ford tough F-150 rolled onto to the driveway lights blaring stereo blasting it reminded me of a huge vicious bulldog waiting to rip me apart. I was scared puppy, because I thought those people were going to kidnap us.
The teenagers managed to get a glimpse of my burgundy soccer jersey. The roundup of the slightly disoriented adolescents managed to climb out of the pickup there movement was slow and jerky like a string puppet.
As we got to a different plot I turned my head and Sahil and he was gone. They had got him the evil little Attila the Huns had snatched him up and going slowly torture him. Those minions-
As we slowed Ashani murmured “Everybody here?”
“Yeah um, no Sahil is not here.” I responded.
“Well where is he?” Ashani asked we had stopped and were about 100 yards from the house. As we crossed into the front yard Sahil was bent over panting like a tired dog. Relief poured over my like a giant ocean’s wave. We were safe.

I had a soccer game in Oconomowoc. It takes a long time to get there it was game time we were missing most of our players so we played 7on7. We started with the ball. He punts the ball his team mate gets the ball and scores Noooooooooo. Now it is half time … my dad/coach says we are doing fine now we start with the ball Ian goes down the side line. And shoots and scores they start with the ball we still it from them 10 seconds left 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, and we score and win the game.

Well we got our medals and moved on with the rest of our lives. And that’s how we got our 1st place medal.

Hurricane
